Holiday Gift Guide Tips – With all the best intentions in the world, you decide to gift a beauty product to a friend, family member, acquaintance or coworker.
You walk past the makeup counters and stroll up & down the aisles to see all kinds of boxed beauty geared for holiday gift giving. There are multi-product gifts sets, sparkly shadow palettes, exclusive brush sets, glosses in gorgeous boxes and countless boxed sets of fragrance. After a few moments, you find your head swimming and start to question why you’re even there! Not to worry, it happens to the best of us. After decades of assisting people just like you allow me to offer a few tips on giving the gift of beauty that’s just right for that special someone….First Things First
Ask yourself how well you know your gift recipient. Say for instance that you have a new coworker. You drew their name in the annual Kris Kringle office pool, but haven’t had a chance to get to know them yet. In all honesty, you may want to rethink giving something as personal as fragrance or makeup. A gift of beauty can be interpreted in many ways. In an office setting in particular, you’ll want to keep the gift more professional or generic until you get to know them better.
Addiction Is A Terrible Thing
If you’ve got yourself a self proclaimed makeup junkie on your hands, then surprising them with their new dream gloss color or eyeshadow will bring lots of joy. This is an easy person to give a gift of beauty to. You’ll know what they’re crazy about by listening while they go about their every day conversation. The hint of a great gift is sure to be tucked in there making it easy for you to know what new products they’re craving.
Having Second Thoughts?
When in doubt, go with a great quality hand cream or lip balm. They will always be useful especially in the cold winter months. I have both given and received them and they are always a big hit.
Mirror, Mirror On The Wall
As I have said before, every woman has a version of herself that she likes to see looking back at her in the mirror. Think about your gift recipient. If you are a makeup lover and she’s not, then think long & hard before giving her a makeup related gift. Giving makeup as a gift can make someone as happy as a clam, but it could also be a dud if given to the wrong recipient. I have seen lots of beautiful beauty gifts returned by recipients that just weren’t feeling it.
Know Their Favs
Be brand loyal. When in doubt give them something from their favorite makeup, skincare or fragrance brand (hey, we know everyone loves hush + dotti wink, wink). Aim for something new that they’ve not yet seen or heard of. The holiday assortments are full of limited edition items that are sure to thrill any brand loyal customer.

Power Lunch Time
The next time you both go out for lunch or dinner take a look at what she uses to reapply after the meal. Is it a lip balm or gloss with no color? Is it a 4 step lip primer, lipstick, liner and gloss reapplication? Pay attention to that. It will give you great clues to how comfortable she is with makeup. That clue will let you know if she’s open to receiving makeup as a gift. It will also give you a clue as to what her favorite brands may be.
Gift Cards Are We?
If she is comfortable with makeup, then seek something creative that’s sure to surprise and delight her. If not, you may be better off with a candle or a gift certificate for a mani/pedi at a nail salon in her neighborhood. Gifts like these are personal without being too specific.
Surprise, Surprise, Surprise!!!
Is he/she the person who has everything? If so, then they may already have everything their little hearts desire. You may want to seek out a gift that’s from an indie brand that they may not have heard of. The beauty industry is flourishing these days with lots of bright new stars that they may not even be aware of. You could make their day by introducing them to something new and unexpected.

Go with the tried and true. Gift something they know and love. It may not be the most original gift, but it’s sure to be appreciated and more importantly utilized. Give the gift of a favorite fragrance, body lotion or lipstick. This is a fail safe gift that’s sure to show how much you care by giving a gift they already love.
In The End
Remember, every woman desires to feel pretty. For each woman that will mean different things. Pay attention, be sensitive to their wants and needs. Give some thought to your gift of beauty before actually giving the gift. A spa treatment may mean the world to a busy mom. A new fuchsia lipstick may rock your grandmother’s universe and a new nail polish could be just what your best friend always wanted. The more you observe, the better you’ll be prepared to giving the gift of beauty that’s sure to delight!
Happy Holidays from all of us here at Hush + Dotti.
